You are here: A Curriculum for Excellence > Assessment

It’s vital to constantly monitor, review and measure children’s progress. Curriculum for Excellence aims to improve assessment by providing:

  • a more effective assessment system
  • better understanding of effective assessment practice
  • shared standards and expectations
  • more consistent assessment
  • more responsibility for teachers.

As Curriculum for Excellence is implemented across Scotland, staff will develop new ways of gathering their information to help them decide what stage a child or young person is at, and what their appropriate next steps should be. They will also develop new reporting arrangements that will give parents information about their own child’s learning, next steps and what they can do to help. You can see progress in this area on the Emerging approaches to assessment website.

Parents are a key part of any assessment process. The Assessment is for Learning (AifL) website describes the ten key features of an AifL School and how parents can become involved in discussions about children's learning.
